Meds and therapy thread

I was seeing this therapist who was kind of a life coach until recently. She knew about my bipolar depression and that my doc wanted to put me on anti-psychotics.

When I told her I was feeling unmanageable and suicidal during our last session, she said I had to report it to the cops and maybe go into a psych unit. I've been hospitalized before and know how they treat you like it's your fault for being sick.

I already told her about my past issues with pssych units, but she said she had to follow legal stuff. No other therapist ever suggested a psych unit. She hurt me and I felt betrayed so I fired her. Still haven't found another one. Suicide hotlines are confidential, though. Anyone else have this happen? What did you do?

I was wondering if anyone here has reached out to their previous therapist after, well, it wasn't a good ending. How long ago did all that happen?

Also, I heard you mentioned being admitted to mental health services at some point. Is that right? And with thirty years of therapy under your belt, did you work with different therapists over time?

It sounded like thinngs were really stressful back then, and if she thought you might be in danger, a voluntary section could have been an option. But if the situation was more serious and she felt it was necessary, she would probably go for a compulsory section instead, right?

Since she knew you well, maybe she believed you could handle things without that step and just discharged u when she did?

Just curious what everyone thinks.

Thank you for your reply and concern. This happened in May, and we have'nt spoken since, nor has she reached out to me. Throughout my treatment for mental illness, therapists and psychiatrists have left their clinics, relocated to distant areas or even out of state, closed their practices, or retired. This is one of the few times I've been without a therapist, and it's crucial that I find someone new. Despite losing trust in the psychiatric community, I am actively searching for a therapist in my area. The high cost of gas limits where I can look.

I am grateful she did not act on her concerns. While she might have been tryinng to cover her professional responsibilities, she didn't attempt to talk me out of any dangerous thoughts. Before choosing another therapist, I will be asking many questions. I am also considering a life coach since my insurance covers it.

Hello, thank you for reaching out with your post.

I am not familiar with mental health systems outside of Australia. Bob's advice seems sound.

Your therapist was right to ask about a suicide prevention plan. Additionally, they should have inquired if you had a safety plan as well. If you don't already have one, consider creating one. A safety plan can include details such as who to contact in emergencies and specific actions for you to take. It might also list your doctor's information and any medications you are on.

Finding a template online, printing it out, and sharing it with your new therapist could be helpful.

A safety plan is just as important as your treatment plan.

Best wishes

Thanks so much for the advice, black cat-smoe of what you said is already happening, but printing out a safety plan for my new therapist sees like a solid move honestly. My current therapist was totally right to ask if I have one, but saying, "If you do have a plan, I'll have to call the authorities..." felt off key-I mean, not trying to argue here or anything-just wanted to share how it came across. Really appreciate your help!

In the UK, a CPN usually only gives you twelve sessions. So this could be the last one-yuor final goodbye session with Mr Chips where they'll chat about what you've picked up and if you're ready to move on. You might get some extra time to wrap things up too. It's like saying farewell but hopefully the stuff you learned will help you rock your life going forward.
Good luck with all that, honestly!
BOB
