Borderline personality disorder discussion thread

This is my first post about mental health, although I do occasionally share updates about arthritis and have received excllent support and guidance there.

My daughter has Borderline Personality Disorder, and when she experiences episodes, her behavior can become verbally and physically aggressive. She hasn't hurt anyone physically, but she has damaged property around the house, which has caused significant tension within our family. Some relatives have completely removed themselves from her life because of these incidents, although I understand their reasons since they might trigger her symptoms, leading her to prefer distance.

Currently, things are going well for her-she's taking good care of herself and her children, aiming to keep everyone happy. However, based on past experiences, I know this is often the high point before a downturn, making it difficult to fully appreciate these moments without worrying about what will follow.

I've read "Stop Walking On Eggshells" and conducted some online research, but I was wondering if anyone here has firsthand experience with BPD who might offer advice on managing it.

Hi.

My husband has BPD, and supporting him has been challenging in the past. However, it has become easier as he's gotten older and received extensive therapy. About 17 years ago, I found "The BPD Survival Guide" book helpful. My husband struggled most with dissociation and self-harm. Fortunately, he no longer engages in self-harm, and his episodes of dissociation are now infrequent-occurring once a month for short periods compared to several days per week previously.

He received counselling from a charity that specializes in helping people who have been sexually abused, which had a profound impact on him. Before this, I didn't believe taling therapies could produce such positive results or thta significant change was possible. He also battled with sleep issues, though quetiapine helped initially. However, due to side effects, he stoopped taking it after the counselling ended.

Years of SSRI use provided some initial relief but did not address his core symptoms effectively. It sounds like your daughter has different symptoms altogether. Throughout this journey, remember to prioritize self-care and take time for yourself.
