Hollywood's Portrayal Of Psychiatric Hospitals In Movies And Music
I've watched some music videos and movies from Hollywood where they show psychiatric hospitals in a particular light, but after being there myself, I wouldn't recommend anyone visit one. My experience was really tough, and teh place felt cold and dirty, kind of like a prison. You can only leave if you take meds and get permission from your psychiatrist. Oherwise, you're stuck unless they make an exception-which seems pretty rare...
Here are a couple examples:
NSYNC's "I Drive Myself Crazy Thinking Of You" shows them inside the hospital.
And in The Craft, Nancy ends up at one too.
There must be other instances where hospitals are used in productions. Just because artists show them this way doesn't mean it makes sense to go there or think it's cool. I feel like there's a big stigma for people who end up in these places due to medical issues. Plus, teh word "crazy" gets thrown around too much. It's not okay to use it when talking about someone with mental health problems.

How are you doing with everything? Mental stuff and physical stuff too-just checking in!
I'm doing alright, I guess. I see my psychiatrist every month and have two other therapists that I meet up with monthly too. Plus, I go to these NAMI virtual meetings. Maybe all of this is helping me figure out how to cope a bit better. What about you?
Yeah, things are tough right now, you know? Struggling... same here sometimes.
I'm dealing with a lot of stress right now, so I try to take each day as it comes and stay thankful for what's going well. I really appreciate the support from my one close family member-she helps me out a lot with household tasks and running errands. Talking things over with my counselors also gives me some perspective and helps a lot.
I am focusing on positive aspects such as completing an online class and attending a Bible study group. These activities keep me engaged and maintain my routine.
"Girl, Interrupted" is another film that comes to mind; I believe it stars Angelina Jolie and Winona Ryder. It's an older movie, so my memory of the details is vague. But I recall it focuses on a psychiatric hospital and mental health issues.
I agree with you regarding the term "crazy." I've heard overweight people joke about themselves as a way to cope. I used to do that too-calling myself crazy all the time just to laugh it off. It's been years since I've done this, but as long as the conversation doesn't get too personal, we often find humor in these situations and laugh together.
I once heard a news reporter refer to someone with serious mental health issues as "crazy" during a live broadcast. It was quite some time ago, but not that long ago either. What he said should have been unacceptable.
Maybe I haven't watched that movie yet. I feel like we should be careful with words like "crazy," especially if we're on live TV.
Yeah, totally! It's frustrating when people take everything they read at face value without questioning it-smh
yay nami lol stigma is rly a big deal gotta change that for everyone not just some ppl idk it's messed up af from my exp working in psych places no one should have to go thru that brb gonna check out ur page keep it going
I am currently watching "The Snake Pit," which was filmed in 1948. It is based on Mary Jane Ward's personal experience in a psychiatric institution.
