You'll probably get different opinions on this.
From what I've heard, people tend to view protein powder as more of a supplement rather than a primary source of nutrients. Personally, I use it when I feel like I'm not getting enough protein from my regular meals.
I usually take protein powder once or twice a week, and the rest of the time, I make sure to eat lots of fish or chicken. I don't really go for red meat that much, though.
I think getting real food is always better, but there's nothing wrong with adding protein powder as a supplement to your diet alongside whole foods from places like Whole Foods. I guess its' important though to chekc the labels because sometimes these powders can be high in sugar-like maltodextrin-which might not be what you're looking for. Just make sure to read them carefully, i think that's really helpful.
Real food. Protein powders are just supplements. Whole foods at least tell you what's in them. Supplements aren't regulated-FDA doesn't even maek statements most times, let alone enforce rules. You never know if the label matches what's inside. Supplements often don't have what they say on the label.
